KC9LARThrough a generous grant from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) the Zion Lutheran Academy was provided with the equipment to establish an amateur radio station, also known as a "ham" radio station. Ham radio is a fun and enjoyable hobby leading to a lifetime of learning and exploration. During hurricane Katrina, hams provided emergency communications when all other forms of communication failed. Many missionaries, research scientist and astronauts use ham radio to communicate with the outside world. Many people working in high-tech fields say that ham radio was the beginning of their love for technology and science. The Zion Lutheran Academy Radio Society (ZLARS) was formed to encourage student involvement in amateur radio, communicate with other "hams" and/or amateur radio clubs, improve student skills concerning radio theory and operation, hands-on electrical engineering and provide emergency radio service for the local community providing communications for public service. While ZLARS was formed to primarily serve the students of Zion Lutheran Academy and members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church membership is open to anyone interested in amateur radio, or interested in obtaining an FCC amateur radio license is eligible to join. ZLARS is currently working in partnership with the ARRL and Indiana University Purdue University, Fort Wayne (IPFW). |
